Testing and Commissioning

Fixed Systems

Design and installation of fixed systems is one of the key elements of the company. The knowledge of components and standards is used by our engineers to ensure that the systems serviced by Ocean Engineering are ready for use at all times. Our knowledge of the way in which systems work and the standards required by the classification societies enable us to look closely at all aspects of the systems including storage, control and distribution of extinguishing agents.

We are experienced in the field of servicing CO2, Halon, FM200, Foam, Water-fog, Sprinkler and Powder systems. We have an in depth knowledge of the workings of a wide variety of valves which not only helps us to service systems in a safe manner, but allows us to carry out testing which not only meets the regulations, but to any additional level that the vessel may require.

Our experience of a wide variety of systems allows us to easily determine areas which may cause failure, and non operation of the system in a fire situation. This coupled with the companies engineering background allows us to repair most faults without any down time to the vessel, or to provide a valid temporary solution to keep the system on line until full repairs can be carried out. This applies to fire and gas detection systems, as well as suppression systems. In the unlikely event that a system is beyond our capabilities, i.e. where manufacturer’s software is required, we will always inform the customer before commencing work.

Portable and Wheeled Fire Extinguishers

Portable and wheeled fire extinguishers are the first line of defence in fighting fires. Fast deployment of portables particularly in an engine room fire can prevent the need for the use of the main system, and the loss of power by the vessel. In order that the extinguishers are always ready for use, regular yearly servicing should be carried out by a competent company. Ocean Engineering’s service engineers are BAFE (British Association of Fire Engineers) qualified, and kept up to date both with the relevant British Standard 5306 Part 3, the Classification society requirements and up-dates from the extinguisher manufacturers. Our Fire Engineers are regularly audited as part of our quality system.

We are available to service extinguishers anywhere in the country and abroad, including offshore installations. With our background in marine engineering, we are fully aware of the effects the marine environment can have on fire fighting equipment and our Engineers are trained to be aware of the differences in standards required from that of our land based counterparts.

Where possible, extinguishers will be serviced on board to minimise disruption to fire cover, alternatively we would supply temporary substitutes if there was a need to remove extinguishers for testing or other work. Not only are our Engineers competent in the maintenance of extinguishers, but are also trained to recognise when the wrong type of extinguisher is applied to a risk, and to recommend the correct extinguishing medium for each application.

Hoses, Hydrants, and Nozzles.

Another key part of a ships first aid fire fighting equipment are the hoses and hydrants situated around the vessel. We have the capability to service all these elements, including the removal and refurbishment of hydrant outlets of all types, Instantaneous, Storz, etc. Hoses are checked for wear and pressure tested as required. Branch pipes and hydrants are checked for ease of operation, the correct delivery of water, and shutting off after use. The same standards are applied to this type of portable equipment as to portable extinguishers.
